IS YOUR SWEET TOOTH MAKING YOU AGE FASTER?
We all know the saying “you are what you eat.” Most of us know lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains are good for us, and we all should be limiting the consumption of processed foods. But let’s be real. We’re human, and eating “good” all the time is difficult. We find pleasure in indulging once in a while on those “not so good for you” sweet treats. Now that Spring is here, Easter is just around the corner, and who doesn’t love Easter candy? Those yummy Peeps, chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, Easter cakes and cookies are all irresistible temptations. So, how bad can all these sugary treats really be? When it comes to your skin’s heath and appearance you just might be surprised.
Believe it or not, consuming too much sugar and simple carbohydrates is as damaging to your skin as it is to your waistline, if not more so. The fancy name for what happens is called glycation. When we consume our favorite sweet treats, the sugars consumed enter your bloodstream and attach to proteins found in your skin to form harmful new molecules called Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs). The more sugar in your diet, the more AGEs you develop.
Our skin has proteins that are most susceptible to these AGEs. The AGEs damage the fundamental proteins called collagen and elastin that keep our skin smooth, plump and firm that give us our youthful complexion. The sugars we eat bond to the collagen and elastin, creating the AGEs, causing these proteins to break down and become stiff and inflexible resulting in a dull looking complexion, loss of volume, and the creation of fine lines and wrinkles. Even worse, AGEs also interfere with the production of new collagen and elastin making this damage irreversible and difficult to treat without professional intervention.
At Always Beautiful Medspa, we offer a range of treatment options to reverse the look of those fine lines, wrinkles and volume loss due to the glycation process, restoring the youthful appearance and vibrancy of your skin. Although prevention is the best remedy, we can help if you chose to indulge in sugar! Visit us for a free consultation to learn how Juvederm, Voluma, and Botox, along with professional skin-care treatments such as dermaplaning, microneedling and chemical peels can restore lost volume while smoothing out those fine lines and wrinkles.
