Is Botox Off Limits During the Summer Months?
- Posted on: Jul 15 2018
Botox® and dermal fillers quickly changed the game of anti-aging when innovative products were first introduced to aesthetic medicine. Over the last several years, we have seen an enormous shift in trends. While cosmetic surgeries such as eyelid rejuvenation and facelifts continue to number over 100,000 each year, injectables number in the millions in terms of how many treatments are performed on an annual basis. Clearly, there is a lot to be gained by reducing the signs of aging with appropriate products, and there doesn’t seem to be much that Botox can’t do. However, some believe that Botox does have a limit; that it cannot be obtained during the summer months.
Is there truth to this?
The truth is that many doctors do advise patients to avoid sun exposure after getting Botox. However, there is no reason to assume that this is because UV light inhibits the results of treatment. In reality, the reason why it is wise to minimize exposure to sunlight and tanning beds for a day or so after getting Botox is that this exposure could worsen side effects like redness and swelling. It’s that simple. In the end, catching a few rays after getting Botox won’t diminish the youthful effects of this cosmetic injectable.
But There is Something You Should Know
Botox treatment is often combined with dermal fillers to obtain the best results. If you get Botox and dermal fillers together, or if your concerns are treated only with dermal fillers, you do have more to worry about than a little more swelling and redness. The way that dermal fillers work is by depositing specific chemicals into superficial tissue. The most popular compound for filling lines and contouring the face is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid, as well as collagen, are vital to supple, firm skin. Each of these chemicals is also susceptible to breakdown that results from UV exposure. Just like too much sun and too much tanning can degrade natural collagen and hyaluronic acid, it is possible for the hyaluronic acid in dermal fillers to also break down more quickly due to ultraviolet light.
