The much anticipated arrival of Juvéderm Voluma™ XC is finally here! The first filler specifically developed for the cheek area, Juvéderm Voluma™ XC, has just been approved by the FDA to correct volume loss in the cheek area. For years, many fillers have been used off-label for correcting this area but this is the first hyaluronic acid filler to be approved by the FDA for this purpose.
“As people age, the cheek area can lose volume, causing the cheeks to flatten out and the skin to droop and sag,” says Beverly Hills, CA, dermatologist Derek H. Jones, MD, a clinical investigator in the Juvéderm Voluma™ XC pivotal study.
Different than other injectables that are currently on the market, Voluma is made with the thickest hyaluronic acid to date and allows for the gel to flow more easily and consistently. It also contains a small amount of lidocaine which helps to numb the treatment area during the injection procedure.
When a hyaluronic acid filler is injected into areas that show signs of aging, water is drawn to the area and binds to the molecules of the filler to fill in the lines and wrinkles by literally plumping them up with moisture. In the case of Voluma XC, the gel is injected into the cheek area to gently lift the skin, eliminating the appearance of hollow cheeks.
According to Dr. Jones, in clinical trials physicians and patients were able to see instant correction of age-related volume loss in the cheek area, which resulted in a more youthful appearance overall. The most common side effects observed were temporary injection-site tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain, redness, discoloration, and itching, but all were moderate in severity.
